NORTH KOREAN ECONOMY
Economy in the DPRK is based on the principals of state-run or collective forms of property on production means and real estate. Juche ideas establish the major line of economic policy as self-orientation and independence. The complete victory of socialism suggests nationalisation of all production and agricultural facilities and farms. If a cooperative farm becomes a state farm it is considered as a step to complete victory of socialism. In recent years factories and farms have got more independence in planning and distribution of profits.
Economic statistics are not published since 1987 to prevent speculations about the country. Money in DPRK play an additional role in socialist distribution system. Since adoption of the Act on joint ventures in 1984, two kinds of currency were introduced. One is still playing additional role in internal economy and distribution and another was used only for foreign trade and circulation among foreigners in the DPRK. The system was not new as far as it existed also in the former USSR and until 90-s in China. After 1992, exchange certificates were abolished and now only one national currency is used.
Many factories in the DPRK was built with technical support from the USSR and other East European countries for the production which was supposed to be exported to these countries. After the socialist block collapsed orders were frozen and most of the countries become useless. They need to be re-equipped but it’s impossible because of lack of investment.
One of the most developing industries in DPRK and in Pyongyang particularly is housing. It is comparatively cheap because army soldiers and students are mainly used as the working force. In the capital city there are many well built apartment complexes such as Kwanbok and Tonil of which North Koreans are proud a lot. The specific detail
about construction works is that giant projects can be completed within a very short, sometimes unrealistically short period of time. So called speed methods based on heroism of people mobilized on a construction.
